13 Dominican Republic Nationals Charged in $5 Million Elder Fraud Scheme Targeting 400+ Seniors Including 50 in Massachusetts
Federal authorities have charged 13 individuals, all citizens of the Dominican Republic, in connection with a transnational elder fraud ring that targeted more than 400 senior citizens across the United States. The scheme involved impersonating victims' grandchildren over the phone to deceive them into surrendering their life savings. The total amount stolen is estimated to exceed $5 million. Among the victims, at least 50 were residents of Massachusetts, with an average age of 84. The FBI Boston led the investigation, describing the operation as "cruel and malicious." Separate from this case, federal prosecutors have also charged three men, including a former Brink's employee, with stealing over $2 million from a Brink's armored truck in the Philadelphia area. Additionally, law enforcement agencies in Massachusetts have arrested two men in connection with a 73-kilogram cocaine seizure in Revere, and other local crimes including armed robberies and jewelry thefts have been reported.
