AI Voice Clone Scam Costs Florida Woman $15,000

A Hillsborough County, Florida resident lost $15,000 after fraudsters used artificial-intelligence software to replicate her adult daughter’s voice and claim the young woman needed immediate bond money, according to local news reports issued on 16 July. Believing the urgent call to be genuine, the victim transferred the funds before confirming her daughter’s safety. Family members said the scammers likely harvested publicly available videos from Facebook or other platforms to create a convincing AI-generated audio clip. The incident highlights a growing wave of voice-synthesis schemes in which criminals exploit readily available generative-AI tools to stage virtual kidnappings and other extortion attempts.
