Recent claims of a data breach at cryptocurrency exchange Bitfinex, involving the alleged theft of personal details of 400,000 users and 2.5TB of data by ransomware group FSOCIETY, have been met with skepticism by Bitfinex's CTO, Paolo Ardoino. Ardoino has denied these allegations, stating that the data purportedly stolen does not match their records and suggested that the incident was a hoax involving old data from previous breaches repackaged as new. He noted that no ransom was demanded, which is unusual for genuine breaches. Additionally, security researchers suggest that the claims might be part of a scheme to market hacking tools to potential criminals. Out of 22,500 alleged customer records, only 5,000 corresponded to actual users, and it was also revealed that Bitfinex stored plaintext passwords.
