A Broward Sheriff’s Office deputy fatally shot a man in Cooper City on Saturday after the man, who authorities say had earlier shot himself, attacked the officer in a fast-food restaurant parking lot. Deputies responded shortly after noon to reports of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at a McDonald’s near the 10200 block of Griffin Road. When a deputy approached to provide aid, the man allegedly assaulted him, prompting the deputy to open fire. The suspect died at the scene. The deputy and the suspect’s mother were taken to a local hospital for treatment of injuries that were not caused by gunfire. Their conditions were described as non-life-threatening. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has opened an investigation, which is standard procedure for shootings involving law-enforcement officers. Authorities have not released the names of those involved or additional details about the weapon used.
