A five-year-old boy died after being shot in the head inside an apartment in Chicago’s Kenwood neighborhood on the afternoon of Aug. 24, according to police. Officers were called to the residence in the 4400 block of South Greenwood Avenue around 1:17 p.m. and recovered a handgun at the scene. The child was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital in critical condition and later pronounced dead. Investigators and a local pastor in contact with the family said the incident appears to have been accidental. A police report reviewed by local media indicates the boy may have found a firearm that had been left in a purse. The weapon was secured by police as evidence. On Aug. 26, Chicago police charged a woman connected to the household with child endangerment, alleging she failed to store the gun safely. No additional arrests have been announced. Advocates and city officials have used the case to reiterate the availability of free gun locks through the Chicago Department of Public Health and to stress the importance of keeping firearms inaccessible to children.
