A two-day, three-state manhunt for Mason Payne ended Wednesday evening when Connecticut police arrested the 23-year-old Vermont resident at a Stamford motel, authorities said. Officers found Payne at the Red Carpet Inn around 5 p.m. and recovered two firearms from his room and vehicle. Payne was wanted in connection with an armed domestic assault reported Tuesday in Dover, Vermont. Later the same day, Massachusetts State Police say he fled a traffic stop in Holyoke, dragging a trooper several feet with his Audi sedan before escaping south on Interstate 91. Police departments in Vermont, Massachusetts and Connecticut, along with the FBI, had warned the public that Payne was armed and dangerous and had threatened to harm law-enforcement officers. Charges are expected to include assault with a deadly weapon, assault and battery on a police officer, and related firearms offenses. Payne remained in Connecticut custody pending extradition proceedings.
