Chicago’s Civilian Office of Police Accountability has opened an investigation into a police-involved shooting that unfolded early Wednesday in the Englewood neighborhood on the city’s South Side. Authorities said officers responded to gunfire in the 5800 block of South Shields Avenue shortly after daybreak. Investigators later cordoned off two additional locations—near 70th Street and Yale Avenue and at the Dan Ryan Expressway’s 75th Street entrance ramp—indicating the episode spanned at least three separate scenes. Chicago police reported that several individuals were taken into custody. The department has not disclosed whether anyone was wounded or what precipitated the gunfire, and no officers’ injuries were immediately reported. COPA is leading the inquiry, as required whenever a Chicago police officer discharges a weapon.
