Former GOP State Senator William 'Sam' McCann, who ran a third-party campaign for governor of Illinois, has been sentenced to 42 months in prison for fraudulent use of campaign funds, money laundering, and tax evasion. McCann pleaded guilty shortly before his corruption trial began in February. He misused campaign funds for personal expenses, including mortgage payments, purchasing two pickup trucks, making $100,000 in credit card payments, buying recreational vehicles, and taking a family vacation to Colorado. The sentencing took place in federal court on Tuesday.
