In a series of recent crackdowns, New York City has intensified its efforts against illegal activities, focusing on both squatters and unauthorized cannabis shops. Six squatters were reported to have taken over a suburban home in Georgia and subsequently used a neighbor's car. In a separate incident in Queens, Lance White-Hunt, a 24-year-old squatter, was indicted on 18 counts including burglary and identity theft after he allegedly forged lease documents and changed locks to illegally occupy a home, using a Shake Shack receipt to falsely prove his residence. This incident was discovered on March 5. Concurrently, NYC has launched a five-borough initiative to shut down illegal cannabis shops, leveraging new state legislation that permits the city to padlock businesses unlawfully selling cannabis. This enforcement action included a notable operation in the Queens business district, reflecting the city's broader commitment to curbing such illegal establishments.
