A New York Police Department detective was shot in the arm and leg shortly before 9 a.m. Friday while attempting to stop an apparent carjacking on the Whitestone Expressway near 22nd Road in the Whitestone section of Queens, according to law-enforcement officials. The 28-year-old gunman, a recently paroled offender with roughly two dozen prior arrests—including one for subway fare evasion the previous day—was taken into custody at the scene. Investigators said the confrontation began when detectives returning from serving a warrant saw the suspect trying to seize a for-hire vehicle and, moments earlier, an occupied car driven by a woman. The wounded detective, assigned to the Queens North Warrants Squad, was rushed to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center and is conscious, alert and expected to recover. The incident comes one month after an NYPD officer was shot and killed in Manhattan, intensifying concern over violence directed at city police officers.
