Six individuals have been arrested in connection with a fraudulent procurement scheme at Eskom's Kusile Power Station. Among the suspects are a former procurement officer and a procurement manager. The scheme involved the unlawful purchase of a pump in 2018 for R857,977, despite an identical pump having been purchased in 2015 for only R18,835, resulting in significant financial losses for Eskom. Two suspects remain at large, and the arrested individuals are scheduled to appear in the eMalahleni Magistrates' Court. Separately, five South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) employees have been charged with over 1,300 counts of fraud related to a grant card scheme that allegedly siphoned more than R260 million. The suspects, including employees arrested at the Johannesburg local office and one who surrendered to police, appeared in the Lenasia Magistrate’s Court. The case has been postponed for further investigation and additional charges. The arrests follow earlier detentions in February, and more arrests are expected. In another case, a 49-year-old man in Mpumalanga was arrested after police discovered over R1.2 million in cash hidden under his bed and in other parts of his home. The suspect, linked to a commercial goods clearing company, faces charges of money laundering, bribery, and violations of the Prevention of Organised Crime Act and the Tax Administration Act. Mozambican currency was also seized during the raid.
