A passenger train travelling between Copenhagen and Sønderborg derailed on Friday after colliding with a farm vehicle at a level crossing near Tinglev in southern Jutland, Danish police said. The crash left one person dead and about 20 injured, two of whom were flown to hospital by helicopter. The collision, which occurred between the towns of Tinglev and Kliplev, prompted the incident commander to label the situation a “major catastrophe,” triggering a large-scale response that included firefighters, helicopters, drones and search dogs. National rail agency Banedanmark reported that at least two carriages left the tracks. Rail operator DSB said roughly 95 passengers were aboard, among them pupils from a school in Sønderborg. Services on the line between Tinglev and Sønderborg were suspended while crews cleared debris and began inspecting the track. Authorities have opened an investigation into why the train struck the slurry tanker, and the accident site is expected to remain sealed off for several hours.
