A major cyberattack on Change Healthcare, identified last month, has significantly disrupted the U.S. healthcare system, causing daily losses estimated at $100 million for providers and between $500 million to $1 billion in revenue for hospitals and physician practices. The attack, which began on February 21 and now enters its 21st day, has led to a halt in billions of dollars in payments, with Change Healthcare processing about 50% of medical claims and approximately $2 trillion in transactions annually. This has forced doctors across the nation to find ways to keep their practices running amidst the ongoing crisis. The White House has responded by summoning the CEO of UnitedHealth, the parent company of Change Healthcare, as the payment paralysis enters its third week. Meanwhile, the healthcare sector faces a growing threat from cyberattacks, with Change Healthcare being a critical example. UnitedHealth Group has faced at least six class action lawsuits for failing to protect personal data in the breach, with analysts estimating a significant loss in market cap for the company of about $27 billion. Efforts to restore services are underway, with electronic payments expected to resume on Friday. This incident has highlighted the urgent need for stronger oversight and protection mechanisms within the healthcare technology sector.
