On August 12, 2024, the DeFi Education Fund (DEF) announced the resolution of all disputes related to a patent for oracle-like technology owned by True Return Systems (TRS). DEF acquired the TRS patent, which was being used in legal actions against MakerDAO and Compound Protocol. This acquisition aims to prevent the patent from being used offensively against other projects, promoting the benefits of open-source software within the cryptocurrency sector. Additionally, recent governance proposals in the DeFi space include EtherFi increasing its ETHFI buybacks from 5% to 25% of protocol revenue, and Compound Finance exploring a staked COMP implementation that would receive 30% of protocol revenue.

We @fund_defi are happy that we can ensure this patent on oracle-like tech will not be used offensively against any other projects. Open source software benefits all of us. https://t.co/4KisQoW2i2
Great work by @fund_defi that highlights a major structural problem in our intellectual property system: patent trolls. Glad to see DEF take care of this one, but as we’ve seen in other tech sectors, we’ll likely see more patent trolls go after real builders as crypto matures. https://t.co/roi4IaJHhS
