In Arizona, the Department of Justice has accused two wound care company owners of accepting over $330 million in kickbacks as part of a scheme to fraudulently bill Medicare for amniotic wound grafts. The scheme involved billing older patients approximately $1 million each for these grafts, which are dressings used to help heal wounds. Attorney General Merrick Garland announced charges against doctors, nurse practitioners, and others across the U.S. involved in various scams, including a $900 million scheme in Arizona targeting dying patients. The fraudulent claims, submitted over less than two years, amounted to more than $900 million for grafts used on fewer than 500 patients. Four individuals from Arizona are implicated in bilking Medicare of $600 million in the wound-care scheme.
