Two former postal workers have been charged with stealing U.S. Treasury checks valued at more than $4 million from the JFK Airport Mail Facility. The checks included Social Security benefits, COVID-19 stimulus payments, and tax refunds. The charges follow an 18-month criminal investigation that concluded in Brooklyn. The investigation was conducted by an inter-agency task force, which arrested the two postal workers and three of their associates. In total, five defendants have been charged. United States Attorney Peace stated that the former postal workers abused their positions of trust to allegedly pull off one of the biggest thefts at John F. Kennedy International Airport. The stolen checks were sold by the former USPS employees.
