Gunvor Group, a leading global energy trader, has agreed to plead guilty to U.S. bribery charges, according to multiple sources. The charges stem from allegations that Gunvor paid bribes to Ecuadorian government officials to secure contracts between 2011 and 2020. This plea is part of a settlement with the U.S. Department of Justice, in which Gunvor will pay approximately $661 million. The case was unveiled in filings in the Brooklyn, New York federal court. This settlement comes shortly after a former trader from Vitol, another major player in the energy trading sector, was convicted in the same court. The plea and subsequent financial settlement mark a significant development in the U.S. government's crackdown on corruption in international energy trading.
