The rescheduled hearing for preliminary court approval of the UFC antitrust settlement took place today. Judge Boulware did not grant preliminary approval for the UFC class-action antitrust settlement. Boulware expressed several areas of concern and seemed to be leaning toward denying the deal and moving to a jury trial. This development is unusual as settlements are typically approved. The judge appears convinced that UFC is an unlawful monopsony. If the case goes to trial, fighters could end up with significantly more or absolutely nothing, making it a much riskier proposition.
The judge pushing this to a trial (if that happens) means the fighters could end up with significantly more or absolutely nothing at all. Much riskier proposition. https://t.co/zHF6ZzkvNF
While a lot frowned on fighters settling for monetary damages and want the case to go to court, we did see that video of Nam Phan this week, he's gonna be in need of $$ for his care and medical needs that a settlement could provide.. is Judge pushing this to trial best thing?
This is a pretty wild development. Settlements are pretty routinely approved. Judge is pretty convinced UFC is an unlawful monopsony. https://t.co/jBzL3mzFkZ
