A recent analysis highlights the crucial role of immigrants in the U.S. tech ecosystem, revealing that over 50% of billion-dollar startups, known as unicorns, were founded by immigrants or their children. Specifically, 55% of unicorns have at least one immigrant founder, while 64% were founded by immigrants or their descendants. Additionally, immigrants hold key leadership roles in 80% of these companies. The data indicates that these 44 companies, observed in a 2016 study, were collectively valued at $168 billion and created an average of approximately 760 jobs each. Furthermore, immigrants are responsible for 23% of U.S. innovation output, dominating in patent contributions and global impact. The findings also show that 46% of Fortune 500 companies were founded by immigrants or their children, underscoring the significant contributions of this demographic to the American economy.
“You take the top 1%, or .01% from other countries - that's perfectly fine." Uhhh…. 1% of India is 14 million. And those people will want to bring their families. You’re looking at an easy 50 million, if not more. Have any of the people who keep saying this crap actually done… https://t.co/FHq6lcFpu3
I’ve benefited from working with (and for) many successful engineers and leaders who were also immigrants like me. Proud 🇺🇸 citizen for 16 years now. https://t.co/Hn6elN0HqQ
