RealPage, a rent-fixing software company, is currently under FBI investigation. The company, associated with ThomaBravo, has been accused of implementing apps that charge bogus fees, monetize vacant apartments, and inflate toxic property bubbles. There are calls for regulation and investigation of RealPage, as its rent-setting advisory software is widely used by academic and government researchers. Critics argue that eliminating RealPage's practices could potentially benefit housing situations, even if it does not solve all issues. YIMBY advocates believe ending coordinated rent hikes could be beneficial.
It's really weird. There's no downside to eliminating the RealPage conspiracy. Maybe it won't improve the situation with housing but maybe it will. Either way it's not bad for YIMBY's to end coordinated rent hikes. https://t.co/gCaMDpwYs1
My take on RealPages is that it should be regulated and investigated. But rent setting advisory software is a hard business to stop because everyone, including academic & gov't researchers, uses rent data collection. I see it daily.
