Chicago attorney Robert Kowalski has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for embezzling $8 million from the Washington Federal Bank for Savings in Bridgeport, which later collapsed. The sentencing follows his conviction last year on charges of embezzlement, bankruptcy fraud, and income tax fraud after a 3 1/2-week trial. U.S. District Chief Judge Virginia Kendall delivered the sentence, criticizing Kowalski for fabricating records and denying responsibility for his actions. Kowalski has connections to influential figures, including former Alderman Ed Burke and Oscar D'Angelo.
