GUYANA'S FINANCE MINISTRY, GOVERNMENT ENTITIES TO REQUEST ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FROM THE U.S. ON SANCTIONS IMPOSED ON GUYANESE NATIONALS -GOVERNMENT RELEASE

The United States has imposed sanctions on Guyanese mining magnate Nazar Mohamed and his son over allegations of defrauding Guyana's government of tax revenues. Additionally, the sanctions target Mae Thomas, Guyana’s Secretary to the Ministry of Labour, for her role in public corruption. The U.S. Treasury Department emphasized its commitment to exposing corruption and promoting accountability worldwide. The sanctions also include gold traders involved in the corruption that deprived Guyana of critical revenues. In response, Guyana's Finance Ministry and other government entities plan to request additional information from the U.S. regarding these sanctions. Mae Thomas has been sent on leave with immediate effect.
