The University of South Carolina ordered a campus-wide shelter-in-place on Sunday evening after an unconfirmed report of an active shooter at the Thomas Cooper Library in Columbia. The Carolina Alert, sent shortly after 6:40 p.m. ET, described the suspect as a six-foot-tall white male wearing black pants and instructed roughly 38,000 students and staff to evacuate the area, barricade doors if necessary and follow police commands. Officers from the USC Police Department and surrounding agencies converged on the library and adjacent buildings, while outdoor sirens and public-address systems warned people to stay clear. About 30 minutes later, university spokesperson Jeff Stensland said investigators had found no evidence of gunfire or a gunman, though searches of affected buildings continued and the shelter order remained in force. No injuries were reported. Officials are now examining the source of the initial call, which authorities said may have triggered a false alarm.
