Recent heatwaves across Europe are projected to have a notable impact on economic growth in 2025, according to a report by Allianz Research. The study estimates that France could lose 0.3 percentage points of GDP growth due to extreme temperatures exceeding 32 degrees Celsius. More broadly, the heatwaves may reduce Europe's overall GDP growth by 0.5 percentage points this year, with a day of extreme heat equated to half a day of strikes in terms of economic disruption. The heatwaves are also causing substantial challenges beyond growth figures, affecting public health, construction, and agriculture sectors. Record temperatures have been recorded, including 46.6°C in Spain and Portugal and over 39°C in France, leading to crop damage, increased irrigation demands, and higher costs for farmers. The cumulative economic impact of these heat episodes is estimated to run into several billion euros.
