Recent economic indicators from the United States and Europe show mixed signals of growth and sentiment. In the U.S., the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) Small Business Optimism Index for June remained steady at 98.6, matching expectations but slightly down from 98.8 previously. Hiring plans and the percentage of companies reporting higher selling prices increased, while expectations for a better economy declined and compensation plans decreased. The University of Michigan's preliminary July sentiment index rose to 61.8, surpassing the forecast of 61.5 and the previous 60.7. Current conditions were reported at 66.8, above the expected 63.9, while expectations improved to 58.6 against a forecast of 56.9. Inflation expectations also moderated, with the one-year outlook dropping to 4.4% from 5.0% and the five-year outlook to 3.6% from 4.0%. In Europe, the Eurozone saw loan growth to non-financial firms rise to 2.7% year-over-year in June, up from 2.5% in May, and household loans increased to 2.2% from 2.0%. However, the Eurozone's M3 money supply growth slowed to 3.3% year-over-year, below the expected 3.7% and the previous 3.9%. Germany's Ifo Business Climate Index edged up slightly to 88.6 in July from 88.4 in June but fell short of the 89.0 forecast, marking the seventh consecutive monthly increase. The current assessment index for Germany was 86.5, just below the estimated 86.7. Italy's consumer confidence improved to 97.2 in July, exceeding expectations of 95.9 and the prior 96.1, while manufacturing business confidence rose to 87.8 from 87.3, above the forecast of 87.5. Overall, these data suggest cautious optimism amid ongoing economic challenges, including rising tariffs and inflation concerns.
