President Donald J. Trump has signed an executive order aimed at accelerating growth in the U.S. commercial space sector by eliminating duplicative regulations and shortening environmental reviews for launch and re-entry licenses. The directive, issued on Aug. 13, instructs the Transportation Secretary to streamline permitting, create a dedicated advisor on commercial space innovation and appoint an Associate Administrator for Commercial Space Transportation within the Federal Aviation Administration. The order also calls on the Secretaries of Commerce and Defense, along with NASA’s Administrator, to align approval processes for new space activities and assess whether state coastal-zone rules are hindering spaceport development. Supporters say the measures will reduce costs for emerging launch providers and satellite operators, reinforcing U.S. leadership in space as the nation celebrates National Aviation Day and its broader aeronautics legacy.
