Finnish lawmaker Eemeli Peltonen was found dead on Tuesday inside the national parliament building in Helsinki. Police said emergency services were alerted at 11:06 a.m. local time and that no criminal activity is suspected; local media, citing parliamentary security officials, reported the death as an apparent suicide. The 30-year-old Social Democratic Party member was serving his first term after winning election in 2023 and had been on medical leave earlier this summer for kidney-related treatment. Prime Minister Petteri Orpo suspended government deliberations for the day, calling the news "truly sad" and offering condolences to Peltonen’s family and colleagues. Parliamentary Speaker Jussi Halla-aho described the MP as a widely respected figure across party lines, while flags outside the legislature were lowered to half-mast. Authorities have opened an investigation into the circumstances of the death, but reiterated that foul play is not suspected.
