Meta Platforms Inc., led by Mark Zuckerberg, is exploring partnerships to integrate stablecoins such as USDC and USDT across its platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, potentially leveraging the Ethereum network to enable instant cross-border payments for its 3.5 billion users. Major financial institutions like Citi and Deutsche Bank foresee stablecoins playing increasingly central roles in mainstream finance over the next five years, with Citi projecting stablecoin issuers could drive over $1 trillion in new U.S. Treasury purchases by 2030. Stablecoin activity has surged, exemplified by the Base network's record $3.81 trillion in transfers and 915,200 monthly active users in Q1 2025. The stablecoin market cap has nearly doubled since May 2023, reaching $240 billion, with over 250 different stablecoins operating across more than 130 blockchains. Industry giants including Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, and Meta are intensifying their engagement with stablecoins, contributing to $15.6 trillion in stablecoin volume this year, surpassing traditional payment rails. Meanwhile, Coinbase has invested in Canadian stablecoin issuer Stablecorp to broaden access to tokenized Canadian dollars. The evolving stablecoin ecosystem features new vaults and lending pools offering yields above prevailing risk-free rates, while regulatory developments under the current U.S. administration are expected to accelerate mainstream adoption. However, concerns about potential emergence of "dark stablecoins" have been raised amid tightening regulations.

Citi estimates that stablecoin issuers could drive more than $1 trillion in net new purchases of U.S. Treasuries by 2030. This is a pretty profound macro shift, no? Stablecoin reserves as a new structural source of demand for U.S. debt. https://t.co/gk1FwWmTQN
