France is currently experiencing a series of severe weather events, including wildfires, heatwaves, storms, and flooding. As of mid-August 2025, six departments, including Aude, were placed under red vigilance for forest fires, with Aude suffering a major wildfire that destroyed 17,000 hectares of vegetation and significantly affected local viticulture. Heatwaves have persisted, with up to 13 departments initially under orange vigilance, gradually decreasing to seven departments by August 18. Storm warnings have also been issued, with up to 81 departments under yellow vigilance for thunderstorms by August 19. Following the heatwave, heavy rainfall and flooding prompted Météo-France to place several departments under orange vigilance for rain and flooding, including Gard, Hérault, Lozère, and Côtes d'Armor. This number increased to 11 departments in the center and east of France by August 20, and later five departments in the northeast remained under orange vigilance for rain and flooding by August 21. The Haut-Rhin department was specifically maintained under orange vigilance for flooding. Additionally, seven regions in France are reported to be experiencing extreme superficial drought conditions. Authorities continue to monitor the evolving weather situation, with warnings that orange vigilance for storms and flooding could be extended to other departments in the southeast and Corsica. The combination of heat, drought, wildfires, and subsequent heavy rains has created complex challenges across multiple regions in France.
