France is experiencing an extended heatwave with multiple departments under varying levels of heat and fire risk alerts. On Tuesday and Wednesday, 14 departments were placed under red vigilance due to extreme heat, with temperatures reaching up to 40°C in the southwest, including cities like Montpellier, Perpignan, and Toulouse. The heatwave led to a large portion of the country being under orange vigilance, peaking at 80 departments by Friday. By Saturday, the number of departments under orange vigilance decreased to 54, with an expected improvement in conditions. Concurrently, there has been a high risk of wildfires, with three departments placed under red vigilance for forest fires on Saturday and five on Sunday. Since June, authorities have detained 27 individuals and investigated 83 others in connection with forest fires. As of Saturday, six departments remain under red vigilance for fire risk, underscoring the ongoing threat posed by the heatwave and dry conditions. Several regions have also recorded temperature records during the nights, exacerbating the situation.
