France’s top-ranked men’s player Arthur Fils withdrew from the US Open on 19 August, saying he has not fully recovered from a stress fracture in his back. The season’s final Grand Slam begins in New York on 25 August. Fils, 21 and ranked No. 20, first sustained the injury during Roland-Garros, where he pulled out after the second round. He also skipped Wimbledon and managed only two matches at the Toronto Masters before renewed pain during subsequent training in Toronto and Cincinnati convinced him to end his hard-court campaign. In a statement on Instagram, he described the decision as “difficult but reasonable” and said he is focusing on a complete recovery for the remainder of the season. Earlier the same day, compatriot Terence Atmane also announced his withdrawal from the US Open because of injury, further thinning the French contingent in the men’s draw.
