Olivier Giroud marked his first Ligue 1 appearance in 13 years by scoring 11 minutes into Lille OSC’s visit to Brest on Sunday. Picked in Bruno Genesio’s starting line-up at the Stade Francis-Le Blé, the 38-year-old striker converted a through-ball from fellow summer recruit Félix Correia to open the scoring. The goal is Giroud’s 74th in the French top flight and his first since leaving Montpellier in 2012. The former Arsenal, Chelsea and AC Milan forward returned to Europe this summer after a season in Major League Soccer, signing a one-year deal with Lille. Giroud had already registered three goals during pre-season friendlies, and his immediate impact in competitive play underscores Lille’s hopes of challenging for a European place. The match against Brest was still underway at the time of publication.
