French imam Hassen Chalghoumi has filed a criminal complaint against La France Insoumise member of the European Parliament Rima Hassan, accusing her of incitement to violence after a 17 August post on X (formerly Twitter) that mentioned him by name and included an hour-glass emoji. Supporters of the imam describe the symbol as a veiled death threat, comparing it to a ‘fatwa’. Jonas Haddad, counsel for Chalghoumi, told Europe 1 on 19 August that the message represented “a very clear threat” that should carry “legal consequences”, adding that Hassan had previously targeted the cleric online. Commentator Vincent Roy called the post “intolerable”, while Haddad said it demonstrated a fundamental hostility toward France. Hassan, an LFI MEP known for her activism on Middle-East issues and her support for the “Correct the Map” initiative, has not publicly responded to the complaint. French prosecutors must now decide whether to open a formal investigation into the allegation of incitement to violence against a religious leader.
