A massive wildfire has been raging in the southern French department of Aude since August 5, 2025, becoming the largest wildfire in France in nearly 80 years. The fire has consumed approximately 17,000 hectares of vegetation across 15 communes, an area larger than Paris, including forests, vineyards, and residential zones. It has resulted in one confirmed death, several injuries including some serious, and three people reported missing. The blaze has destroyed or damaged 36 houses, around 20 additional buildings, 18 hangars, three chalets, and 54 vehicles. Approximately 2,000 firefighters, supported by aerial resources such as Canadair water bombers and helicopters, have been mobilized to combat the fire. The fire led to the closure of the A9 motorway and several local roads. French Prime Minister François Bayrou and Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau visited the site, with Bayrou describing the event as a "disaster of unprecedented scale" and linking it to the effects of climate change. Despite intense firefighting efforts and the fire being declared "fixed" by the prefecture on August 7, the blaze remained active and is not expected to be fully controlled or extinguished before Sunday, August 10. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely due to challenging weather conditions including high temperatures and wind, which pose risks of fire reactivation. The fire has caused substantial economic damage, particularly to local viticulture, with reports of up to 80% of vineyards affected. Residents displaced by the fire have begun returning to their homes, although some areas remain closed and power restoration is ongoing. Firefighters and local officials emphasize the need for continued vigilance and preventive measures to avoid further flare-ups.
Firefighters have contained a massive wildfire in southern France but still face a "complicated" struggle, as officials warned Sunday that scorching heat and dry winds could reignite the blaze. https://t.co/k8MOgjJV42 https://t.co/uqSUUelJht
