At least six people were killed in three separate non-motorised aircraft accidents across France on Sunday, 17 August 2025. In Morbihan, Brittany, a glider crashed near the Brocéliande aerodrome in Loyat at about 3 p.m., fatally injuring a 59-year-old instructor and his 61-year-old trainee. Eighteen firefighters were mobilised, but both occupants were pronounced dead at the scene. A few hours later two people died when another glider went down in Charente-Maritime on the Atlantic coast. Authorities have not yet disclosed the victims’ identities or the circumstances surrounding the crash. Separately, a 65-year-old Dutch competitor was killed during a hang-gliding competition on Chabre mountain in the Hautes-Alpes after his wing reportedly detached in a sudden gust, sending him about 20 metres to the ground. Local gendarmeries have opened investigations into each incident to determine their causes. The accidents occurred amid the peak summer season for recreational flying in France.
