Disney Cruise Line’s newest vessel, the 144,000-gross-ton Disney Destiny, floated out of the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany on 9 August, marking its first contact with open water. The maneuver, accompanied by the unveiling of the ship’s anthem and a ceremony led by Hero Minnie Mouse, positions the Destiny for final outfitting ahead of its scheduled maiden voyage in November. On the same day in Florida, Royal Caribbean’s 250,800-gross-ton Star of the Seas—tied with its sister Icon of the Seas as the world’s largest cruise ship—docked at Port Canaveral for the first time. The 20-deck vessel can carry more than 7,000 guests and 2,350 crew and will begin seven-night Caribbean itineraries on 16 August, underscoring the port’s strategy of courting ever-larger ships to sustain double-digit passenger growth.
