Operations at Puerto Santo Tomás de Castilla, Guatemala's key national port, were halted for over 24 hours due to a strike by a group of operational workers. The Empresa Portuaria Nacional Santo Tomás de Castilla reported that this disruption negatively impacted the national economy and the perception of clients and users. Various organizations, including Camagro Guatemala, the Chamber of Commerce of Guatemala (CamComercioGT), Industria Guatemala, AmCham Guatemala, CACIF Guatemala, the National Transport Coordinating Committee, and the Association of International Transporters, condemned the strike, describing it as illegal and harmful to the country's trade competitiveness and logistics. The strike caused estimated losses exceeding US$30 million, with AGEXPORT noting a daily loss of approximately US$10 million and highlighting the negative effects on connectivity with 25 other ports. In response, the Empresa Portuaria and CamComercioGT filed legal actions, including an amparo before the Constitutional Court, to demand the immediate resumption of port operations. President Bernardo Arévalo maintained a stance of constructive dialogue, with ongoing good-faith negotiations between stakeholders. An agreement was reached following discussions among authorities and the labor sector, leading to the resumption of port activities. José de la Peña, president of the port's board, emphasized that operations have returned to full capacity and that a working group will continue negotiations on a new collective bargaining agreement. He acknowledged the existence of underlying issues but stressed the importance of resolving them through dialogue and collaboration. Industry leaders expressed relief at the resolution, emphasizing the need to restore competitiveness and credibility in Guatemala's logistics and trade sectors.
