Between August 21 and August 26, 2025, multiple traffic incidents and accidents occurred across various routes and urban areas in Guatemala, causing significant traffic disruptions. Notable incidents include a trailer accident at kilometer 42.5 near Sumpango, Sacatepéquez; a multi-vehicle collision involving a bus and three cars at kilometer 21 on the Interamericana route; and repeated trailer breakdowns on the cuesta de Villalobos, which frequently obstructed traffic. On the calzada Roosevelt at kilometer 15, a motorcyclist died following an accident, and another motorcyclist was injured in a collision at the cuesta de Villalobos. Several other collisions and mechanical failures were reported on major routes such as CA-9, CA-1 Oriente, and the route to El Salvador, with emergency services attending to injured individuals. Additionally, a bus overturned at the entrance to San Andrés Itzapa, Chimaltenango, with multiple casualties attended by Bomberos Municipales Departamentales. In the capital's zone 13, the Centro Especializado de Reinserción Juvenil (CER I) experienced a security incident involving a riot and hostage situation where 34 gang members held three cooks captive. The Comando Antisecuestros of the Policía Nacional Civil (PNC) intervened, rescuing the hostages. Several injured detainees were transported to hospitals, including Roosevelt and Seguro Social. Authorities have maintained a police presence and imposed road closures around the detention center, contributing to further traffic congestion. Additional incidents included fallen trees causing obstructions and flooding in various regions such as Suchitepéquez, Chiquimula, and San Marcos, further complicating transit conditions.
