
A wave of scams leveraging advanced technologies and impersonations is targeting individuals worldwide. In Latin America, fraudsters are using AI-generated content to impersonate Princess Leonor of Spain on TikTok, deceiving victims with promises of financial benefits. Victims have reported significant financial losses, with one individual ending up in debt after falling for the scam. Other scams include fraudulent calls where impostors pose as HR employees or government officials, fake parking QR codes, and WhatsApp technical support scams. Thousands have been defrauded online, including one victim who lost $13,000. In Canada, two individuals lost $230,000 to cryptocurrency scams involving AI-generated ads. Additionally, an 80-year-old woman in the United States lost nearly $600,000 to a government impostor scam, later facing a tax bill on the stolen amount. Fake courier services scams have also been reported. Authorities worldwide are issuing warnings and guidelines to help individuals identify and avoid these scams.
