A recent study by the UCLA Williams Institute reveals that approximately 2.8 million people in the United States aged 13 and older now identify as transgender. Among this population, 724,000 are youth aged 17 or under. The data indicates that younger adults, particularly those aged 18 to 24, are more likely to identify as transgender, with a prevalence rate of 2.72%, compared to 0.42% among those aged 35 to 64. The research highlights a continuing upward trend in the number of individuals identifying as transgender. Additionally, mental health concerns are noted within the transgender community, with reports indicating that over 40% of transgender adults have attempted suicide and 56% have engaged in non-suicidal self-injury during their lifetime. The findings have sparked discussions on the social and psychological aspects related to gender identity.
