Alstom has expanded its footprint in India with a contract to supply 39 driverless Metropolis trainsets—234 cars in total—for Mumbai Metro’s forthcoming Line 4. The agreement, valued at “a few hundred million euros,” also covers signalling systems and a five-year maintenance package. Manufacturing will be carried out locally at Alstom’s Sri City facility. The 35.3-kilometre line will link Wadala in central Mumbai to Kasarvadavali through 32 stations. In France, Siemens Mobility has been selected by transport operator RATP to automate Paris Metro Line 13, one of the network’s busiest routes. The project forms part of the capital’s broader push toward driverless operations after the automation of Lines 1 and 4. Financial terms were not disclosed, but the award underscores intensifying competition between European rail-technology groups as cities modernise ageing mass-transit systems.
