BrowserStack co-founders Nakul Aggarwal and Ritesh Arora, both alumni of IIT Bombay, have pledged Rs 100 crore to their alma mater to support campus infrastructure development, focusing on upgrading student housing facilities. The donation, described as the largest philanthropic gesture by Indian startup founders towards an educational institution, will fund the reconstruction of Hostel 6 and the modernization of Hostels 7, 8, and 21 under Project Evergreen. IIT Bombay aims to upgrade hostel facilities to accommodate 14,000 students. IIT Bombay stated that the funds will help meet the growing demand for student housing and enhance the living and learning environment. Previous major donations to IIT Bombay include $11 million from alumnus Jitendra Mohan and Swapna Samant, $18.6 million from an anonymous donor, and Rs 315 crore from Nandan Nilekani. Separately, IIT Madras announced the successful incubation of 104 deep-tech start-ups in the financial year 2024-25, achieving its Startup Shatam mission. Over 50% of these start-ups were founded by the institute’s students, faculty, staff, and alumni, with the remainder by external entrepreneurs. The IIT Madras Incubation Cell has supported 457 start-ups in 12 years, with a collective valuation of Rs 50,000 crore, including two unicorns and one company nearing an IPO. The start-ups span sectors such as manufacturing, robotics, space technology, AI, biotech, and fintech, supported by sector-specific incubators like Pravarthak, Bioincubator, HTIC MedTech RTBI, and the School of Innovation and Entrepreneurship. There are 129 pre-venture teams, with 113 in the Pratham phase and 16 in the Akshar phase. These developments coincide with World Intellectual Property Day 2025, whose theme highlights the role of intellectual property in the music industry and the importance of commercializing creative works. Global organizations and think tanks have emphasized the link between strong IP protections, innovation, and economic growth.
