The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has initiated a probe into a bitcoin-based Ponzi scam linked to the Maharashtra elections, registering an FIR against Amit Bhardwaj and Ajay Bhardwaj. The scam allegedly involved the collection of 80,000 bitcoins, with an estimated worth of Rs 6,606 crore, which were diverted through nine overseas firms for property acquisitions abroad. In connection with the case, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has conducted raids at the residence of Gaurav Mehta, who has been summoned for questioning. The Maharashtra government is also set to investigate allegations against Supriya Sule related to the bitcoin fraud. This unfolding situation has raised significant concerns as the state approaches its elections in 2024.
