The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has taken suo moto cognizance against five restaurants in Delhi, including Chaayos, Fiesta by Barbeque Nation, and Xero Courtyard, for failing to refund mandatory service charges. This action follows complaints received by the National Consumer Helpline regarding the mandatory levy and non-refund of service charges by these establishments. The CCPA has issued notices to these restaurants, emphasizing compliance with consumer protection norms amid a recent Delhi High Court ruling upholding guidelines against imposing mandatory service charges. Separately, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has launched a new digital tool allowing consumers to report misleading claims on food labels. The FSSAI has also challenged Dabur India’s use of the label '100% fruit juice' in the Delhi High Court, stating that such claims are neither recognized nor permitted under current laws and are considered misleading to consumers. Consumers can submit complaints through the FSSAI's Food Safety Connect mobile app or the Food Safety Compliance System online portal. Additionally, the FSSAI has released a public consultation paper on better labeling and regulation of analogue dairy products.
