The Delhi High Court on 3 July issued an interim injunction restraining Patanjali Ayurved from broadcasting, publishing or distributing advertisements that disparage Dabur India’s Chyawanprash product. Justice Mini Pushkarna directed the company promoted by yoga guru Baba Ramdev to withdraw the disputed commercials immediately and barred it from releasing similar material until the next hearing on 14 July. The order followed a civil suit filed by Dabur alleging that Patanjali’s advertisements were misleading and defamatory. In its petition, Dabur contended that the campaign falsely claimed Patanjali was the only producer making Chyawanprash in accordance with Ayurvedic scriptures, described rival products as "ordinary," and raised unwarranted safety concerns. The Gurugram-based company is seeking Rs 2 crore (about US$240,000) in damages for reputational harm. Court filings state Dabur controls about 61.6 percent of India’s Chyawanprash market, where Patanjali is a key challenger. The interim ban tightens scrutiny of comparative advertising practices while the court considers the merits of the dispute.
