Domestic institutional investors (DIIs), primarily mutual funds and insurance companies, have surpassed foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) in ownership of stocks listed on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) of India for the first time in 15 years. As of the March 2025 quarter, DIIs held approximately 16.91% of Indian equities, slightly overtaking FPIs whose holdings declined to around 16.84%, marking a 50-quarter low. This shift reflects a broader trend of increased domestic participation in the Indian equity markets, with DIIs' net buying reaching ₹28,228 crore in April 2025 compared to FIIs' net buying of ₹2,735 crore in the same period. On a daily basis, on May 2, 2025, DIIs and FIIs recorded net purchases of ₹3,290.49 crore and ₹2,769.81 crore respectively in equities. Concurrently, several Indian banks, including IndusInd Bank, have revised fixed deposit (FD) interest rates, with IndusInd Bank offering up to 8.25% interest for senior citizens. Other banks, such as Federal Bank, anticipate further rate cuts as yields remain under pressure, while some banks are offering up to 7.75% interest on three-year fixed deposits following the Reserve Bank of India's repo rate cut. The market continues to see volatility, with only 31% of active funds outperforming benchmarks over the past six months. Additionally, gold has delivered over 30% gains since last year, maintaining its appeal alongside silver as investment options.
