Sudden floods and landslides triggered by a cloudburst in the Himalayan village of Chasoti in Kishtwar district, Indian-administered Kashmir, have killed at least 60 people and left more than 200 others missing, local disaster-management officials said on Friday. The deluge struck on Thursday after an hour of intense monsoon rain sent torrents of water, mud and boulders crashing through the settlement. Many of the victims were Hindu pilgrims who had stopped in the village before trekking to the high-altitude Machail Mata shrine. Authorities said more than 100 people were injured, some of them seriously. The Indian Army, National Disaster Response Force and State Disaster Response Force have deployed helicopters, dog squads and earth-movers in an effort to locate survivors and recover bodies. Rescue teams reported finding personal belongings and kitchen equipment scattered amid flattened houses, while damaged roads and a washed-out highway have slowed access to the remote area. The catastrophe is the second deadly flood to hit the Himalayan arc in just over a week and comes amid a spell of extreme weather that has also claimed dozens of lives in Nepal and Pakistan. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the region has faced "a series of natural calamities," and scientists warn that climate change is increasing the frequency and intensity of cloudbursts and landslides during South Asia’s monsoon season.
