In August 2024, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) continued to sell off shares in the Indian equity markets, with net sales amounting to ₹21,201 crore. This trend was attributed to several factors including the unwinding of the yen carry trade, recession fears in the United States, and ongoing geopolitical conflicts. Despite this outflow from FIIs, domestic institutional investors (DIIs) compensated by being net buyers, purchasing shares worth ₹1,803 crore on August 19 alone. Overall, FIIs recorded a net sell of ₹2,667.46 crore on that day, while DIIs net bought ₹1,802.92 crore. Additionally, India's holdings of American securities reached a record high of USD 241.9 billion in June 2024.
