The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has issued a warning regarding a significant rise in gamified job scams, which have increased by 400% since 2022. These scams typically lure victims through enticing job offers that promise payment for simple online tasks, often starting with small payments to create a false sense of security. Reports of such scams surged from zero in 2020 to 5,000 in 2023. Additionally, a senior citizen in Bengaluru fell victim to a WhatsApp video call scam, losing ₹1.94 crore, while another woman in Dehradun was defrauded of ₹1.7 crore in a similar scheme. Authorities are advising individuals to be cautious of suspicious links and to protect their personal information to avoid falling prey to these scams. Police in Indore recently arrested eight individuals involved in an online betting and dating scam, which had been operating for a year with daily transactions exceeding ₹10 lakh.
