A special drive by Central and State formations to identify and eliminate fake GST registrations has been underway since August 16. This initiative aims to address the growing issue of GST tax evasion, highlighted by the detection of Rs 1.2 trillion in tax evasion using fake input tax credit since 2020. The rapid growth of digital payments has contributed to increased scrutiny of online merchants due to a rise in tax evasion cases.
